My daughter is seventeen. She is attending Pasadena City College and is planning to transfer to a university. Because my daughter knows everything about transferring to a university, my advice regarding transferring to a top university is of absolutely no value to her. Perhaps you would like to put it to use…
What are your top three universities?
Yes, your top three.
Seriously, go ahead and list them:
Now, take five minutes (each) to respond to these questions:
Why do you want to attend University #1?
Why do you want to attend University #2?
Why do you want to attend University #3?
And please, oh please, answer truthfully.
Maybe you want to go to a particular university because your father or mother went there. So, in that case, the reason ‘why’ might be ‘honoring family tradition.’
Or maybe you want to go to a particular university because one (or more) of your intellectual/ professional heroes is a professor there. [By the way, who are your living/working, intellectual/professional heroes? Do they teach? If so, where do they teach?]
Or maybe you want to go to a particular university because of the architectural/environmental beauty of its campus, or because it’s located in a favorite big city.
So, take five minutes to write (or, at least, think about) ‘why’ for each one.
Remember, this is not an application.
It’s just an exercise, a fifteen minute exercise.
For the purposes of the exercise, when you choose your top three universities, please do not consider what is practical or realistic.
Ignore all limitations/restrictions. Imagine, just for the fifteen minutes (five for each of your top three universities), imagine that there are no limitations/ restrictions.
Where would you go if you could go anywhere?
This is just a fifteen minute exercise.
Are you ready?
